Land Use:
About one-fifth of this area is federally owned. An equal or larger proportion is set aside as Indian reservations. The remainder is in farms, ranches, or other private holdings. Most of the privately and publicly owned land is used for range. Less than 1 percent of the total area is cropland used for growing irrigated hay and pasture or for dry-farmed grain and hay.
