Soils:
Most of the soils are Orthents. They are deep to shallow and fine textured to medium textured and have a mesic temperature regime. The medium textured soils have mixed mineralogy, and the fine textured soils have montmorillonitic mineralogy. Loamy Torriorthents (Butche, Canyon, Enning, Nevee, and Spearfish series) are on the steeper landscapes and clayey Torriorthents (Grummit series) on the smoother landscapes. Eutroboralfs (Lakoa and Maitland series) are on the edge of the Black Hills. The nearly level to moderately sloping, deep Haplustolls (Tilford series) and Argiustolls (Vale series) are in areas in the "redbed valley."
