Water:
The low and erratic precipitation is the principal source of water for agriculture. Water for livestock is stored in small reservoirs, but supplies are inadequate for significant irrigation. Irrigation water in quantity is available only along the Yellowstone River and one or two of its larger tributaries. Ground water is scarce in most of the area, but locally sand and gravel deposits and coal beds yield small to moderate amounts.
