Potential Natural Vegetation:
This area supports natural mixed prairie vegetation characterized by western wheatgrass, green needlegrass, blue grama, and buffalograss. Little bluestem and sideoats grama grow on the shallow soils. Big bluestem grows along streams, especially where an effective water table is present. Sand sagebrush grows on sandy soils and silver sagebrush on clayey soils in the west. The eroded walls and escarpments of the Badlands are devoid of vegetation.
