Potential Natural Vegetation:
This area supports natural stands of mixed northern hardwood forest vegetation on the medium textured soils. Oak, maple, white ash, elm, and basswood are dominant species. Natural stands of jack, red, and white pine grow on the sandy soils. Pioneer species of aspen, paper birch, and cherry are on the uplands; spruce and larch are in the depressions. Growing in some parts of the west are prairie vegetation characterized by little and big bluestem and scattered oak trees.
