Water:
Water for range vegetation and dryfarming is provided by the low and erratic precipitation. In much of the area, sand and gravel yield adequate quantities of ground water for livestock and for domestic and other uses. In areas where shale bedrock is near the surface, ground water is scarce and commonly of poor quality. Irrigation water is obtained mostly from the larger rivers, but locally wells provide some irrigation water.
